International Scholarship Application Guidelines

Purpose of Scholarship

Gallaudet makes financial assistance available to qualified, deserving international students who are enrolled in degree-granting programs at the University. Scholarships and other sources of financial aid help ensure students have the financial means to complete their degree and graduate. 

Eligibility is also conditional on a student’s high academic achievement, as evidenced by grade point average, as well as a demonstrated need for financial assistance. Students who receive a scholarship/financial aid are encouraged to use the knowledge and skills they gain from earning a degree to improve the lives of deaf people in their home country or in other countries. 

Funding is available ONLY for international undergraduate and graduate students seeking degrees from the University.


Eligibility Requirements

Applications are evaluated on the following criteria. 

The applicant:
● Has appropriate legal status for studying in the U.S. 
● Is not a U.S. citizen or a U.S. permanent resident. 
● Can demonstrate financial need. Note: Other sources of financial assistance the candidate has received will be taken into account. 
● Is a new undergraduate or graduate student with financial needs 
● Is in good disciplinary standing at Gallaudet University if the applicant is a continuing student.
● Is a continuing undergraduate student who has maintained at least a 2.5 grade point average (GPA) to first receive the scholarship, or at least a 3.0 GPA to maintain the scholarship. 
● Is a continuing graduate student with at least a 3.0 GPA to both receive and maintain the scholarship. (Academic progress reports must be submitted every semester.) 
● Submit two letters of recommendation. Both letters can come from faculty or staff members at Gallaudet University who are familiar with the applicant’s academic ability or performance. OR one letter can come from a Gallaudet faculty or staff member and the other from someone from the applicant’s home country who is familiar with the applicant’s work in the deaf community or a project supported by the Nippon Foundation. 

 
Scholarship Amount

The amount of funding awarded varies and is based on documented financial needs.
 
Expectations of Selected Recipients 
 
In order to receive and retain eligibility for the scholarship/financial aid, students must meet the standards for satisfactory academic progress. Failure to meet the minimum standards will result in termination of the award. Students who cease attending classes or who officially withdraw will be subject to cancellation of the scholarship/financial aid. 
 
  • Maintain a 3.0 GPA and submit academic reports each semester to International Affairs. 
  • Maintain good disciplinary standing at Gallaudet University. 
  • Maintain legal status for studying in the United States. 
  • Participate in designated leadership development programs and activities at Gallaudet University. 
  • Represent the scholarship program when necessary. 
  • Upon graduation, apply learning to help Deaf communities around the world.
