F-1 On-Campus Employment

On-Campus Employment for F-1 Students

F-1 students are generally permitted to work in any position on the campus of the school where they are attending classes and maintaining their F-1 status. On-campus employment does not require authorization or updates to their Student and Exchange Visitor Information System record.

Duration

Throughout the period that a student is pursuing a full course of study. Please note that students are not permitted to work after they complete their course of study or after the last day of final exams before their graduation date. Please note that even if the student’s Form I-20 has not expired after they complete their course of study, they are not permitted to work on campus.

Hours Per Week

Limited to 20 hours per week while school is in session and up to 40 hours per week during official periods when school is not in session (i.e., summer, Thanksgiving, winter, and spring breaks).

Searching for On Campus Job Opportunities

Students searching for on-campus employment are referred to Bison Career Link (BCL). To start, students must log in to their BCL account using their Gallaudet email and password. Once logged in, click the "Jobs" tab at the top of the page; next, click "Gallaudet On-Campus Part-Time" to find opportunities for on-campus employment. Note: Gallaudet’s Kellogg Conference Hotel is located on campus but considered off-campus employment, that F-1 students do not qualify for jobs.

Change of Education Level

An F-1 student may only work on campus after their program ends if they continue their education at the next program level at the same school.  Students must provide an acceptance letter, and their Certification of Finances is approved before they can work.

F-1 Student Transfer

When an F-1 student transfers to a new school, on-campus employment is available to them only at that school after the record release date. The F-1 student cannot work at the prior school after that date.

Reinstatement to F-1 Status

Without valid F-1 status, a student who has submitted reinstatement to F-1 status is not eligible to work on campus and cannot take advantage of F-1 benefits, such as on-campus employment or practical training.

Change of Education Level

If an F-1 student finishes one program of study at one level (i.e., bachelor’s or master’s ) and starts another program of study at the same campus, the student may continue on-campus employment as long as they plan to enroll for the next term.
