Class Attendance and Grade Policies

Class Attendance Policy:

To maintain legal F-1 or J-1 status, international students are responsible for regular attendance in all classes in which they are officially enrolled. The University’s class attendance policy can be found in the Gallaudet Catalog for undergraduate- and graduate-level students.

The student must notify instructors of any situation that causes her or him to miss class. This can be done through official University email. (Students must also check email frequently for communication from instructors or the Office of International Affairs [OIA].) Communication from a personal email account is not acceptable.

U.S. Citizenship and International Services and the Department of State require the University to report any international student violating the attendance policy. University faculty are bound by federal regulations to report to IA if a student stops attending class for two weeks or more without a compelling reason. OIA, in turn, must report the student to the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) within 21 days of the student ceasing to attend class.

Before OIA reports to SEVIS, the student and the academic advisor will be contacted via email to ascertain the circumstances of the classroom absence. If there is no response from the student within five (5) working days, the student’s immigration status (F-1/J-1) will automatically be terminated.

Grade Policy:

As long as an international student is registered, attending all classes, and meeting Gallaudet University’s academic standards, the student is considered to be maintaining status and making normal progress. A student placed on Academic Suspension is no longer considered enrolled in full-time study or pursuing an educational objective and, therefore, not maintaining status.

A student placed on Academic Probation or Academic Suspension who cannot complete the program by the date specified in his or her visa may not be eligible for an extension of stay unless there is a compelling academic or medical reason to support the extension request.

NOTE: You must know and comply with all immigration regulations affecting your F-1 or J-1 Student status. Failure to comply with these regulations will mean the LOSS of your F-1 or J-1 student status. Immigration regulation requires that you maintain your status as a full-time student each and every semester.

Gallaudet University is required by federal law to report in SEVIS whether or not you are fulfilling the rules of my F-1 or J-1 status, as explained above.
