International Visiting Scholar Orientation

Attending orientation is a mandatory part of your J-1 program. Scholars are required to arrive on campus at least two business days before the start of their activities. Upon arrival, scholars must check in first with ISSS at Building 103. Making an appointment is strongly encouraged.

Orientation is held when the scholar's date start program begins, except during summer, thanksgiving, winter, and spring recesses.

Orientation provides helpful information about your immigration status, the campus and local community, culture, and available resources.

The session will cover the immigration regulations associated with your J-1 status, including time limits, health insurance, keeping your SEVIS information current, and travel outside the United States. ISSS will explain restrictions on your employment and how to apply for a Social Security number.

The orientation will also introduce you to our beautiful campus. ISSS will explain how to use public transit and suggest local places of interest to visit during your time in the Washington, DC, area.

ISSS looks forward to meeting you at your orientation!
