Upfront Payment Information

Based on visa category information and country information, international students may be required to pay their tuition and other relevant fees upfront. Upfront payments allow students to pay the full cost of their program per semester in a single payment. Students pay in full before their program and/or orientation begins. Once they have paid, their obligation is complete.  Please note that students who are not classified as F-1 or J-1 are not required to fill out the Certificate of Finances Form (COF).

The following categories of students fall under this category:
  • International students interested in coming to the United States for a short course of study, workshop, or other training event at Gallaudet University must obtain a *B-1/B-2 Tourist Visa under the Continuing and Online Education (COE).
  • Students who are admitted or readmitted or currently are interested in taking online courses in their countries to obtain a degree or certification.
  • International students who are sponsored by family/friends and deaf clubs or organizations are also required to pay their fees in advance before classes commence.
  •
  • ELI students are required to pay their fees in advance before classes commence, and/or orientation begins.

Student Financial Holds on your account could mean:

  • SF5: The student is enrolled in ELI and has to pay tuition upfront.
  • SF6: The student is enrolled at the University and has to pay tuition upfront.
You must pay tuition fees upfront if you have SF5 or SF6 in your Bison account.
Please note that there is an exception
for admitted and readmitted students who have submitted their Certification of Finances forms to International Students and Scholar Services (ISSS) and are requested to apply for an F-1 or J-1 visa.  After reviewing their COF and based on the funding resources, students may be required to pay in advance--partially or fully by Gallaudet University’s Designated School officials (DSOs).  In this instance, they will receive a special letter from ISSS with instructions to make payment in advance to meet these requirements.
There is another exception--for those students
who have received their financial guarantee letters from the following governments: Oman, Saudi Arabia, Gabon, and Botswana.

Students who have received scholarships and/or assistantships from Gallaudet University may still be required to pay in advance for the remaining balance after the scholarship/assistantship has been applied to their account.

Please note that this doesn’t apply to Gallaudet staff and faculty.
Proof of immigration status for each visa category is required to verify and/or waive the upfront payment requirement.
