Student Visa Information

Apply for a visa early!

Once you have received your Form I-20 or Form DS-2019, you must apply for a student visa and make an interview appointment at the U.S. embassy or consulate in your country. It is very important to schedule an interview as soon as possible because the waiting time can be several weeks. You can find instructions to schedule an appointment on the U.S. embassy website.

The visa application fee (Form DS-160) for an F-1 or J-1 student visa at U.S. embassies is $160.00. Please note that applying for a student visa and paying the visa application fee does not guarantee that the student visa will be granted.

For more information on who needs to pay the fee – and to see if paying online is an option for you – go to SEVIS Fee.

Please take the following documents to your nearest U.S. embassy, consulate, or Point of Entry (POE) to apply for your F-1 or J-1 visa:
  • Passport
  • Acceptance Letter
  • Form I-20 or Form DS-2019
  • Financial Support Documentation
  • SEVIS I-901 Payment Confirmation Receipt
